Lima & Surrounds
|
Most travellers en route to destinations in Peru enter via Lima. Spend at least a day or so to enjoy this great city. Now a modern metropolis bustling with energy, it also has much history and colonial charm. The old centre retains much from when Lima was considered the finest city in the New World. At the centre is the Plaza de Armas, where the Archbishop’s Palace vies with the Government Palace, Cathedral, and Municipal Palace amongst other superb baroque examples. Other delights to be enjoyed here are culinary icons ranging from seafood ceviche, to beef hearts or guineapig, all washed down with fine wine or pisco!

There are also other great experiences to be discovered in Lima and its immediate surrounds, be it majestic beaches and boardwalk trails along Miraflores; excellent shopping in top boutiques such as Ripley, or modern custom-built "supermalls" like Jockey Plaza or Centro Larcomar, or hunting for that perfect artisanal gift in one of the many Mercados Indio. We particularly liked the genuine "dim-sum" lunch that can be enjoyed in Lima's Chinatown, just 5 minutes walk NE of the Plaza de Armas!
TIP: As in most big capitals, a very small minority seek to take advantage of tourists; watch out for opportunist theft and avoid any demonstrations! |

Other tourist delights also await the guest in Lima with a little more time, such as the amazing Magical Water Circuit at Parque de la Reserva (largest display of fountains and "water show" in the World!*), or the sights, culinary delights and song of "bohemian" Birranco; or visiting ancient sites such as Pachacamac some 30kms south of the city, Huaca Pucllana in urban Miraflores, or the superb pre-Colombino museum of Larco, probably the best museum of its type in South America!
