Ilha Grande, Brazil - "The Caribbean of Brazil"
|
Midway between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Ilha Grande lies in the midst of a region now known as “The Caribbean of Brazil”.
With a history that includes time as a pirates' retreat, then a slave-traders' base, and most recently one of Brazil's most feared penal colonies that only closed in 1994, it has amazingly been spared from development. Now attracting international interest due to its unspoilt beaches and miles of pristine coastline, it is a little-known jewel that is beginning to be enjoyed by a discerning few. With over 350 islands, more than 100 beautiful beaches and 50+ waterfalls, it is an area of great beauty that is now protected for its nature and wildlife. Home to Brazil's “Mata Atlantica” (Atlantic Rainforest) of which only 5% remains, this is one of few refuges of its type, with one of the richest ecosystems in the world, hosting some of the rarest, Critically Endangered species on the planet. Set against this unique backdrop, Unique Destinations offers two very special experiences in this pristine, little-known haven: Ilha Grande Island Experience Spa Program and The Atlantica Jungle Lodge |
